As you may know, in the summer of 2004, tragedy struck the community of Holbrook when a thirteen year old, Sean Joyce, passed away from Eastern Equine Encephalitis. In the days, months, and years that followed, the community of Holbrook rallied to support Sean’s family, his classmates and each other.
More than twenty years later we can look back and see how we have honored Sean’s life and kept his memory alive by building the Sean Joyce Baseball/Soccer Field next to the Sumner Field with a walking track around both and the presentation of over one-hundred thousand dollars in scholarships to the students of Holbrook. Over the past few years, we have also been able to expand our engagement with the community through our involvement with youth sports, Holbrook Middle-High School and Holbrook Santa.
Those who knew Sean could not be prouder of how his memory has stayed alive within the community, and that would not be possible without the contributions of each and every person who helped along the way.
As a way to thank the community for the love and support and to remember Sean in a special way for his twentieth heavenly anniversary, we held a a Community Give Back. This included cookouts and luncheons; footballs, water bottles, and of course, bug spray, for the flag football and soccer kids; birthday bags for the food pantry, a magic show at the Holbrook Public Library and for the COA, a trip on the Mobster & Lobsters tour. Just to name a few things!
Our favorite part of doing this has been seeing families gathered together. The kids are so happy and appreciative of their gifts. We love seeing kids playing soccer on Seanie’s field - it means so much to us that Sean’s legacy is helping to provide lasting memories for other kids in Holbrook still today.
In order to be able to continue to offer scholarships and keep Sean’s memory alive, we are hosting our annual 5K Road Race and 1-Mile Walk this fall in conjunction with Holbrook's Homecoming festivities.
Apache Way Farm Rescue, Inc., led by NEPCAA member Lori Matta, is a heartfelt sanctuary dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and care of animals—especially horses—with a philosophy of compassion, respect, and dignity. Lori’s journey began when she answered a call about a severely neglected horse named Seneca, and from that moment she committed her life to offering second chances and restoring spirits. Through her leadership, Apache Way honors the belief that animals deserve kindness, not force, reflecting Lori’s lifelong connection to animals and her resolve to make a difference.
Under Lori’s direction, Apache Way gives individual attention to animals in crisis, helping them heal physically and emotionally, and often enabling them to interact with people—such as offering pony rides or gentle connections—with trust and affection. The rescue highlights stories of recovery like “Mama Rose,” and emphasizes that each animal is worthy of love and care no matter their past. Apache Way stands as a testament to the power of compassion in action.
